This is a touchy subject, but I wanted to point out to any visiting Medical MJ patients what the laws here in Michigan DO allow (which is much more liberal than when traveling to other parts of the country). If you have a valid medical card from any other state, you are legal in Michigan to posses up 2.5 oz, as well as any paraphernalia to consume such medicine. Now, I don't know anyone who can consumer that much grass (alone) in a 4 day period (no, that's not a challenge), but I thought you folks should know....should that be something weighing on your mind. The direct link to that portion of the law can be found here: (Sec. 4j) www.legislature.mi.gov/%28S%28ilvaudiyty4cut5532ikld45%29%29/mileg.aspx?page=getObject&objectName=mcl-333-26424and the full law can be found here: www.legislature.mi.gov/%28S%28ilvaudiyty4cut5532ikld45%29%29/mileg.aspx?page=getObject&objectName=mcl-Initiated-Law-1-of-2008I know it sounds silly to be concerned about grass (of all things), but in '09, I had a State Trooper walk up to me WHILE medicating (totally caught me off-guard) during UM at 2:30 am and took my pipe & meds.....this was before we had legal status here in Michigan. Just looking to keep folks safe.....and informed

Jodi- you wouldn't happen to have a medicard would ya? Yes, I'm a legal patient here in Michigan.....and have had to be aware of laws when traveling recently, so I thought the info would be helpful to others If anyone has specific questions regarding the laws, I'll try and point you in the direction for the actual (legal) answers.

My question would be; since I live in Illinois, how long would I have to live in Michigan to get the card?

That's a good question....and a quick glance of the State of Michigan website www.michigan.gov/mmp doesn't quickly answer that. In order to get a card in Michigan, it only says you need to be a Michigan resident. Now, years ago, I remember getting a ticket for not changing the address on my license within the allotted 2 weeks after moving. I had to pay a fine & change my address.....so maybe as soon as you've established a residence (mailing address, bills, etc) so that you could apply for state issued ID? I'll check into this and get a confirmed answer from the agency who issues state ID cards. _____________________________________________________ EDIT Just as I thought.....there is no "time limit" before you can apply for residency, but you must be able to supply the proper documentation to apply for residency, outlined here: www.michigan.gov/documents/DE40_032001_20459_7.pdf Hope that helps

How are the shops out there? Legally, Michigan law doesn't allow for shops......however.....many have been popping up across the state. Honestly, I haven't been to even one, so I'm not sure, but my friends who have say they carry everything from nugget, to edibles, to tinctures.

ann arbor has some good shops. I have a friend out there who swears the jolly rancher candies are amazing. They also have frozen pizzas I did hear though that the really good shops you have to be a "member" and the only way is by knowing someone which sucks.

I just checked with my friends at NORML. Michigan does not have a residency requirement to get a MMJ card ! code and paragraph 33.101 (21) "Visiting qualifying patient" means a patient who is not a resident of this state .

With all due respect to your friend, in order to receive a Michigan issued Medical Marihuana Card, you must be a Michigan resident. Please see this link: www.michigan.gov/mdch/0,1607,7-132-27417_51869_52137---,00.html The code your friend was referring to is, in fact, the same issue I addressed when starting this thread. Any cardholder from any other state is considered a "visiting qualifying patient" and therefore considered "legal" within the state of Michigan. If you possess a currently valid card from another state, there is no reason to get a card from Michigan

Ok, so for us non-resident non-cardholders what is the law for getting stoped with less than a oz. My daughter only got a $50.00 ticket some years ago. Is this the norm?

Fines & charges vary, based on situation, officer & location. Each city & county has different laws. Since I'm on the opposite side of the state, I'm not sure what the local laws around Rothbury are. I DO know that medical necessity CAN be used as a defense, regardless of legal status. Do we have a lawyer reading the board who might be able to chime in?
